Best Happy Hour Downtown Raleigh: Craft Beer & Cocktail Specials at Element

Looking for happy hour in downtown Raleigh that isn't just discount domestics? Element Gastropub's bar program features serious craft cocktails, 20 rotating NC craft beers, and a bar menu that holds up. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Happy hour in downtown Raleigh runs the spectrum — from the sticky-tabled discount-domestics version to actual craft programs that take cocktails seriously. Element Gastropub at 421 Fayetteville St lives firmly on the second end. Our bar program was built by people who care about this stuff, our 20-tap wall rotates constantly with the best NC breweries, and the bar food is actually the same kitchen that runs our dinner service. If you're going to invest an evening downtown, this is where it's worth starting. What Makes a Great Happy Hour The honest answer is: it's not about the discount. It's about whether the bar treats happy hour as a real service or as a way to dump cheap product. The places worth going are the ones where the cocktail menu is the same craft program you'd see at 9 PM, where the beer list isn't the leftover kegs nobody wanted, and where the bar food is more than chips and salsa. That's the bar we built. The Cocktail Program Our bar program is led by people who came up in serious craft cocktail kitchens. The menu rotates seasonally — heavier, spirit-forward drinks in winter; bright, citrus-driven highballs in summer — but a few principles stay constant: Real ingredients. Fresh-squeezed citrus, house-made syrups, fresh herbs from local farms when they're in season. Balance over showmanship. Every drink is supposed to taste like a drink, not a science experiment. An actual zero-proof menu. Not "we can make you a club soda." Real, structured mocktails with the same level of work as the booze list. If you don't know what to order, the bartenders are excellent at reading what you actually want — sweet, dry, smoky, refreshing — and pointing you to the right thing. Just say the word. Seasonal Highlights Some of the cocktails that have anchored recent menus and tend to come back in some form: The smoky mezcal sour — bright lime, agave, smoke, and a touch of bitterness. The drink that converts gin and tequila people both. The winter old fashioned variant — usually with bonded whiskey, demerara, and a fall-spice bitter. A grown-up drink for cold weather. The fresh-citrus highball — different every season but always sharp and clean. A great first drink. The house spritz — bittersweet, low ABV, perfect for a long happy hour where you don't want to peak too early. The dry-January / zero-proof flight — three small zero-proof drinks designed to actually be interesting on their own. Even our bartenders order these. The 20-Tap Beer Wall Our beer program is the deepest in the immediate downtown blocks, with 20 taps that rotate constantly. Most of what we pour is North Carolina craft — Trophy, Bond Brothers, Fullsteam, Ponysaurus, Lonerider, Burial, Hi-Wire, Wicked Weed, and many more. We try to always have hazy and West Coast IPAs, a couple of clean lagers, a sour, a stout, ciders, and one or two "weird" taps for people looking to try something they haven't seen before. For more on the program and current rotation, see the dedicated craft beer post or the live taproom page . The Wine List The wine list is small on purpose. Every bottle was chosen because it's good, not because it's a famous label. We carry a tight by-the-glass selection — usually a sparkler, two whites, a rosé, and three reds — that covers the range without being overwhelming, plus a longer bottle list for people who want to go deeper. The staff knows the list cold; ask them. What to Eat at the Bar Here's where Element diverges from a typical downtown happy hour: the bar food is actually good. The same kitchen that makes our entrée menu makes the bar bites. Some standouts: Wings — six sauces, from Hot Hunee to Jamaican Jerk to Buffalo. The Hot Hunee with a hazy IPA is iconic. Voodoo Chili Cheese Fries — chili, queso, scallions. Made for a beer. Pub Pretzels — soft pretzels with house mustard. The platonic ideal of a beer snack. Loaded Tots — the comfort-food version of nachos. Smash Burger — if you're going to eat one entrée at the bar, eat this. Pairs with anything from a brown ale to a serious old fashioned. Chili Crisp Broccolini — for the table that wants something lighter and a little funkier. Excellent with a saison. The Bar Layout The bar at Element seats roughly a dozen people directly at the rail, with high-tops and a lounge area for spillover. There's no host stand bottleneck — bar seats are first come, first served. If you want bar seats specifically on a Friday or Saturday night, get there a little early. Best Times to Come The most underrated happy hour at Element is Tuesday through Thursday, 5–7 PM . The bar is busy but not crushed, the bartenders have time to actually talk to you, and you can hear the person sitting next to you. Friday after 7 and Saturday nights are great if you want energy; for a date or a real conversation, the early-week window is what we'd recommend. Hours and How to Plan We're open Mon–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri 11am–10pm, Sat 8am–10pm, Sun 11am–9pm . The bar is open during all service hours. No reservation neede
